The Fall Meeting, October 12, 2001

The Mid Atlantic CICS User Group Fall Meeting will be held at the Tyson's WestPark Hotel in Tyson's Corners, Virginia.

9:15 -10:30 First Morning session: Z/OS

Sheri F. Penn is currently a senior zSeries Marketing Specialist in the Baltimore/Washington/Northern VA area. With 6 years in the S/390 brand and 14 years with IBM, Sheri has vast experience in marketing and selling Complex mainframe and total solutions to IBM's largest commercial Customers. Prior to 1996, she was an IBM client manager on The Travelers Account team in Hartford, CT where she focused on storage and lines of Business solutions. Sherri will provide a high level discussion of IBM S/390 and zSeries 900 architecture and technology, including new enhancements for availability and performance such as Fiber Connection (FICON), Processor Upgrade on Demand, Internal Channels, and parallel Sysplex.

Carter Adkinson is currently a Field Technical Support Specialist for the Mid-Atlantic region. His current role includes helping local customers Architect, configure, and support zSeries solutions. His primary areas of Expertise is Websphere and Linux on zSeries. After completing his Masters Degree in Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech, he spent six months in an IBM training program to become educated on S/390 architecture and software. He has been supporting local S/390 and zSeries customers in the Baltimore/Washington area over the past year and a half. Carter will provide a description of z/OS and its key features and functions and how these enhancements will change the way business is done. The key topics that will be covered are Intelligent Resource Director, Hypersockets, and Workload License Charge.

1:30 - 2:30 First Afternoon Session: Java, COBOL and CICS working together.

Peter Brennan is the President and Peter Sperling is the Vice President of Bridgewater Consultants, Inc. They formed Bridgewater in 1993 determined to find a quicker, better and simpler way to develop enterprise software. They both have over 24 years of experience in IBM CICS COBOL software development. They have worked with DB2 since the mid 80s and a number of CASE tools since the late 80s. During the last 3 years they have also worked on developing an enterprise Java solution that compliments their CICS COBOL work. Both are certified Sun Java and IBM Visualize for Java programmers. They will provide an overview of how Java and Cobol can be used to provide a comprehensive solution. The presentation will concentrate on why Java and CICS COBOL does not have to be an "either or" proposition. We will use a live demonstration to show how Java Servlets can provide a modern looking web interface can invoke COBOL programs to perform business logic functions And data I/O, all with the scalability and reliability we expect (and demand) from CICS. We will also cover Java Enterprise Edition (J2EE), Java Server Pages (JSP) and Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs). We will discuss a transition process through which a CICS COBOL programmer can become a competent Java programmer. The demonstration will use Bridgewater's BW*Wizard, IBM's VisualAge for Java, DB2, CICS Client and Transaction Gateway and Merant's (soon to be Micro Focus again) Mainframe Express.

2:45 - 3:45 Afternoon Session 2: Web Enabling

Terry Atkins is a Systems Engineering Manager from Micro Focus, Inc. His career in Information Technology has been in the development and management of application systems. His application system experience includes Mainframe, Distributed, and Web application systems and their successful integration. He joined Micro Focus in 1996 and his current focus is in ensuring successful application system deployment by Micro Focus' customers, stressing the integration of Legacy applications with new and emerging technologies. The presentation will include the various options, methods, and processes available to IT in documenting and web enabling Legacy applications. The process discussed will be Application analysis and understanding; Legacy asset mining and documentation; Componentization of Legacy assets; Web enablement of Legacy assets after componentization; Alternative approaches of web enablement of Legacy applications with an advantages/disadvantages discussion.

After the Route 123 overpass (the second overpass), turn right at the third light (Westpark Drive). the first right on Westpark Drive is the hotel entrance.
